We all have good and bad days, a natural part of most people’s lives. Hormonal imbalance is frequent. Maybe you’ve been surprised by how intensely you reacted to an inconvenience in recent days. Or someone in front of you drove too slowly for a bit too long, or a friend made a joke at your expense. And you lost it. This state of mind happens to the best of us. It looks like our hormones are taking over, which is not pretty. It happens to me, too. When I speak my mind, the person in front of me says nothing, and their eyes look like the ones of a deer in the middle of the street. When it happens, I know I overstep. Usually, I take a deep breath and a couple of drops of the bitter taste of my easy motherwort tincture, and poof, I am back to my lovely self again and this peaceful feeling.
Thanks, Mother Earth, for this kind of medicine!
I bought a package of motherwort seeds from Mountain Rose Herbs a couple of years ago. I planted medicinal herbs in the autumn in my backyard, and they grew into beautiful plants in the spring. Since then, they self-seed every year. In other words, in my moist climate, the motherwort plant reproduces quickly and looks happy. Motherwort is a spreading herb that grows to about four feet in height. In addition, it can be identified by its green leaves and pretty pink to lilac-colored flowers. The pollinators just adored them. As you can see in the picture, I put them in the back of my flower beds, and they thrive and look good.
Above all, I love this medicine because it is a quick fix; within minutes of taking the tincture, you feel your peaceful self again.

DIY RECIPE FOR THE HIGHEST QUALITY AND EASY MOTHERWORT TINCTURE

Motherwort Pacifying Tincture
Tincture are so easy to do. You need two ingredients that's it.
I appreciate this tincture over a tea particularly because of the bitterness of the motherwort.
Ingredients
- Motherwort leaves and flowers
- High proof alcohol vodka
Instructions
- Chop fresh herbs to increase the surface area for the maceration. Pack the herbs, the more you can, into a clean, dry jar with a wide mouth.
- Pour high proof alcohol vodka over the herbs until the alcohol level is an inch above the top of the herbs.
- Cover tightly with a lid and place the jar in a dark place and allow to soak or macerate for 4-6 weeks.
- Strain the mixture through a cheesecloth and squeeze strongly so every bit of possible liquid is drained from the herbs.
- Use a funnel to transfer into labeled, amber bottles and store out of the light.

Motherwort extracts have helped me with menstrual cramps, my menstrual cycle overall, and the mood swings that are related to the PMS symptoms. This medicinal herb is a godsend gift in my home. I hope to share this herbal medicine with you from one woman to another. You can make it with fresh motherwort flowers and leaves. Dried herbs work, too; just adjust the quantity of your alcohol-based tincture.
What is the scientific name of Motherwort?
The botanical name of Motherwort is leonurus cardiaca. You can translate it from Latin to Lion-Hearted herb, one of my favorite medicinal plants. I read this website’s definition of the name, so here I am sharing it with you: ” Motherwort is the plant world’s mama bear. Or mama lion, from its Latin name Leonurus cardiaca, which translates to the Lion-Hearted One” (Bennett, 2014). 1
My herbal medicine journey
You should know that I am not a doctor or an herbalist. I am a curious and loving mom who loves to study and share things. I have fun researching the internet and reading about herbal medicine in books. There is a vast world out there called nature, which is full of beauty that I love and cherish. Please follow me along, and we can discover how Mother Nature gives us incredible tools to live and how easily we can connect with her.
For a major part of my life, herbal products were some pills that you would buy at a store. But now, the herbs are growing in my backyard, just like the usual herb gardens that a great cook uses. Nobody questions a chef when he uses thyme in his soup. We should be ready to fill our homes with delicious herbal creations and expand our knowledge of how plants can nourish, soothe, and support.
The reality of this post is that you too can grab a handful of herbs and make a tincture out of it. Feel powerful again by helping your family, your body, and your neighbors. Let’s go, it’s a magnificent journey!
What do other herbalists think of Motherwort Tincture?
“I consider motherwort tincture* (Leonurus cardiaca) a staple in my herbal apothecary. Many a time in my menstruating years, working away in my office, I’d groan suddenly at the tug and ache of my womb with my moon coming on. My head swam, numbers and letters blurring. I’d reach for motherwort tincture to help me come back to my center. The soothing hand of motherwort seemed to take the edge and intensity off. I could take a deep breath and focus once more on the task at hand. * Cautions: Motherwort should not be used during pregnancy. Additionally, if you experience menstrual flooding (most common in menopause) please consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before taking motherwort. ” 2
Motherwort Benefits
“Motherwort has many other properties to support and decongest the physical body, in addition to the mind and emotional body. Phytotherapist and herbalist David Hoffmann explains that it is used as a bitter and pungent digestive-stimulant, a relaxing nervine, an antispasmodic and emmenagogue to the reproductive system, and a tonic for the cardiovascular system (Hoffmann, 2003).Its main uses are within the reproductive system and the heart, where many people feel and hold a great deal of tension and anxiety. Because motherwort soothes and calms these nervous feelings, herbalists use the plant to release the feelings from the physical body as well. For example, nervousness resulting in delayed and/or sluggish menstruation can be relaxed into ease and regularity with motherwort (Holmes, 1989).Plants are genius in this way, containing healing properties that access and heal all parts of ourselves, physical, emotional, and mental. They understand true healing is when all parts of ourselves are given care, attention, and love. Motherwort offers her gifts of protective maternal grace, easing the mind, soothing the womb, and letting the heart feel safe and strong.” 3
Motherwort tea
You can brew a motherwort tea with fresh or dried herbs, but the taste is bitter. Please use your own easy motherwort tincture with the recipe I am giving you here or a commercial one that is ready to use. You can add a dose of tincture to half a cup of orange juice, and the bitter taste is bearable.
