The Benefits of Fresh Thyme in Your Gentle Soap Bar

Thymus vulgaris (thyme) is an herb known for flavoring food, but it’s also believed to have medicinal properties. Research shows that it may have anti-inflammatory properties, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and other effects that may be useful in treating various conditions. 1 Thyme is also ideal for reducing redness and blemishes, perfect for those with problematic skin. This soap is specially formulated for gentle facial cleansing.
The gentle bar that cares for sensitive skin
This thyme face soap suits sensitive skin and is best for normal to oily skin types. The recipe also includes a small amount of natural astringent witch hazel, which can reduce redness and inflammation on problematic skin. If you have none handy, you can replace it with distilled water.2
A Comprehensive Guide to Crafting A Solid Facial Soap Bar

How to Create a Natural Fresh Thyme Three-in-One Facial Soap Bar
Transform your skincare routine with this simple DIY guide to making a versatile thyme-infused soap that cleanses, nourishes, and freshens your skin.
Materials
- 1½ tsp (1 g) fresh thyme or ¾ tsp dried
- 1½ tsp (7.5 ml) witch hazel or water
- 8.5 oz (241 g) natural white soap base cut into 1” (2.5-cm) cubes
- 0.45 g (~⅛ tsp) 13 drops Bergamot essential oil (optional)
- Rubbing alcohol for spritzing
Tools
- Double boiler or a heat-safe bowl over a pot of simmering water
- Soap mold (silicone molds work best)
- Measuring cups and spoons
Instructions
- **Prepare Your Workspace:**
Ensure your work area is clean and all your supplies are organized. This ensures a smooth crafting process. - **Melt the Base & Infuse:**
Combine the thyme, witch hazel, and soap base in your double boiler. Cover it loosely with a lid. Heat over medium-low until the soap melts, 15 to 25 minutes, then lower the heat to low and infuse it for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it has taken on a pale green color from the thyme. - **Mix and Pour:**
Remove the pan from the heat, but keep the jar of melted soap in the hot water. Add the essential oil (if using). Stir again and pour the soap through a strainer into the soap mold. (If you want the decorative thyme leaves omit the straining). Spray the top of my soap with rubbing alcohol. - **Cool & Set:**
Keep it in the mold until the soap is completely cooled and hardened; it takes 2 to 3 hours to cure. - **Unmold and Wrap:**
Unmold & wrap the soaps. Store them in a cool, dry place. The soap’s green color will eventually fade to a creamy, mellow shade, store them in a dark place, out of direct sunlight or indoor light, for the longest lasting color. This solid facial soap bar is good for daily face, hand, and body use!
Notes
#### Tips:
- Customize your soap by experimenting with different essential oils that complement thyme.
- Add exfoliants like oatmeal or ground almonds for extra texture and gentle exfoliation.
